Best Places in Houston

Houston Space Center

The Manned Space Center in Houston started managing the US space flights in 1964 with Gemini IV.

It also controlled the Apollo flights through the moon landing in 1969.

The center continued to control US flights through the Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and the Space Shuttle programs.

Renamed the Johnson Space Center in 1973, it is the training center for US astronauts.

The Houston Space Center opened in 1992 and is among the popular attractions in Houston.

It offers experiences, exhibits with over 400 space artifacts, and the largest moon rock and lunar sample collection in the world.

A behind-the-scenes view of the NASA Johnson Space Center is also provided.

The Space Center, located at 1601 NASA Parkway, is open

  • Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm
  • Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm

Hours are extended from 6 pm to 10 pm between November 13, 2021, and January 2, 2022, for Galaxy Lights, a holiday light display.

The Art Car Museum is one of the unique places to see in Houston.

The museum is located at 140 Heights Blvd and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.

Orange Show

The Orange Show features handmade architectural art by Jefferson Davis McKissack.

He used concrete, brick, and steel. Then, he added tractor seats, wagon wheels, gears, mannequins, and statuettes.

There is also a stage, pond, oasis, wishing well, and museum.

The Orange Show is located at 2402 Munger Street and is open for tours Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm.

Houston Museum of Natural Science

The Houston Museum of Natural Science offers exhibits about astronomy, history, and energy.

It also includes the Cockrell Butterfly Center and the Burke Baker Planetarium.

It is located at 5555 Hermann Park Drive and is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.

Houston Downtown Aquarium

The six-acre, 500,000-gallon Houston Downtown Aquarium complex was created from the redevelopment of the Central Waterworks Building and Fire Station No. 1.

It houses 300 species of fish and other aquatic life from around the world.

Along with the exhibits, the Houston Downtown Aquarium complex offers educational programs, rides, games, shopping, and a restaurant.

The exhibits include the Texas Bayou, a Rainforest, and the White Tigers of the Maharaja’s Temple.

The rides and games provide all the fun of an amusement park.

The restaurant is designed around a 150,000-gallon aquarium containing 100 species of aquatic life.

Located at 410 Baggy Street, the Houston Downtown Aquarium exhibits are open

  • Sunday through Thursday from 10 am to 8:30 pm
  • Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm

The rides run

  • Sunday through Thursday from 10:30 am to 9 pm
  • Friday and Saturday from 10:30 am to 10 pm

The restaurant is open

  • Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 8:30 pm
  • Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm

The Houston Downtown Aquarium can also accommodate birthday parties, banquets, and meetings.

Johnson Space Center Houston

Houston Zoo

With over 6,000 animals from over 900 species, the Houston Zoo is the second-most visited zoo in the country.

Among the habitats, they have the African Forest, McNair Asian paraphrase Habitat, South America’s Pantanal, Texas Wetlands, John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo, and the Bug House.

Located at 6200 Hermann Park Drive, the Houston Zoo is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm DST and 9 am to 6 pm CST.

The Houston Zoo will be celebrating Zoo Boo from October 1 to October 31, 2021.

During Zoo Lights, the zoo will be open from 9 am to 4 pm and the Zoo Lights display will be from 5 pm to 10:00 pm

Children’s Museum Houston

The Children’s Museum Houston offers hands-on activities. It is not just one of the Houston tourist attractions, but is also a local favorite.

The Children’s Museum includes a town with stores and government run by the young guests.

They can set allowances for adults, solve mysteries, or become an undercover spy for S.E.C.R.E.T.

Spies will crack codes, crawl through laser tunnels, and defeat villains.

For the science-minded, there are robots to be built.

Physical challenges include a three-story tower and a suspended challenge course.
