San Francisco Cable Car
Historic Cable Car in San Francisco, California

Description
The San Francisco cable car system, the last manually operated cable car system in the world, is located in San Francisco.
The cable car system is an iconic symbol of San Francisco and forms part of the intermodal urban transport network run by the San Francisco Municipal Railway.
Only three of the 23 lines were established between 1873-1890.
One of these lines combines parts from two earlier lines.
It runs two routes from downtown to Fisherman’s Wharf and one along California Street.
Although commuters use the cable cars to some extent, the majority of their seven million annual passengers are tourists.
As such, the wait time to get on the cable car can often exceed two hours.
They are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, along Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge.
The National Register of Historic Places lists the cable cars.
