Fort Caroline
Attraction in Jacksonville, Florida

Description
Fort Caroline was an attempt to establish a French colonial settlement in Florida.
It was located on the banks the St. Johns River, in present-day Duval County.
It was established by Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere, a French colonial leader, on June 22, 1564 as a new territory claim in French Florida.
It also served as a refuge for Huguenots who were being persecuted because they were Protestants.
The French colony was at war with the Spanish, who established St. Augustine on September 1565.
On September 20, Spanish troops under Pedro Menendez de Aviles seized Fort Caroline.
The Spanish occupied the site as San Mateo up to 1569.
