The Eastern State Penitentiary (also known as ESP) is an American prison that was once located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
It is located at 2027 Fairmount Avenue, between Corinthian Avenue & North 22nd Street in Fairmount section of Philadelphia.
It was operational from 1829 to 1971.
The penitentiary developed the revolutionary system for separate incarceration that was first introduced at the Walnut Street Jail.
It emphasized reform over punishment.
